The trips to the vet continued this week. Last Saturday, Rusty's dinner came back up, and he was unable to eat anything on Sunday. We knew this was serious, because Rusty has been continuously hungry since the day he showed up at our door, a starving stray. The poor guy was all hunched up, obviously under the weather. At the vet on Monday, the outlook was grim. With his ongoing diarrhea, we knew cancer was a possibility, and an xray showed a soft mass in his intestine. The vet suggested some overnight IV fluids, on the chance that the blockage would move on through his digestive system with a little help. If there was no improvement the next morning, we authorized surgery to see what was really going on, and euthanasia if she found inoperable cancer. We said a teary goodbye and stood in the parking lot sobbing after we left.
That night was restless. Even Detour was distressed, because she couldn't find Rusty. She thought he'd gotten into the garage, and kept meowing for us to let him back inside. Tuesday morning, we waited impatiently for a call from the vet. And boy were we in for a surprise. She said Rusty was lively and hungry and begging for attention! Another xray confirmed that the mass in his intestine had moved and changed consistency. They gave him food throughout the day and he kept it all down. Everybody was surprised at his recovery.
We brought him home that night, and he is back to his old self, constantly begging for food and attention. It could have been a hairball, but we don't know for sure. We're just happy to have him back.

Wow, I can just imagine how stressful your days have been this winter - and not even with snow! Glad to hear that all are well at your house now.
Wow, yay Rusty!! I"m glad to hear he's doing better - what an awful night it must have been for you all.
